Fitness Programs and Assessment

The two goals for improving the fitness levels of New Jersey’s students include the following:

A. FITNESSGRAM ADOPTION

To implement the Fitnessgram as a statewide standardized fitness assessment program. Great benefit could come from providing teachers an easily managed goal-setting system for their students, one that regularly exposes students to the sense of accomplishment gained from measurable fitness achievement. Currently, 21% of NJ schools have adopted the Fitnessgram and plans are in place to increase the adoption of Fitnessgram by all schools in New Jersey.

B. STATEWIDE DATA COLLECTION

As the number of school programs that adopt Fitnessgram increases, NJAHPERD will plan a statewide data collection project that will demonstrate the fitness levels of New Jersey students. This critical information will assist NJAHPERD to help make the case to decision makers to increase the time, faculty, and resources for Health and Physical Education in New Jersey’s schools.
